– what is Convergences? |
Convergences is a small symposium for rhetoric, theory, and writing. This symposium is designed as an alternative space for scholarly discussions and collaborations that are explicitly focused on contemporary theoretical and philosophical issues. Convergences will explore emerging models of thought and communication at the intersections of culture, technology, language, and politics.
This symposium addresses a lacuna in the current structure of Rhetoric and Composition conference venues. For emerging scholars in our field, there are few events at which scholars can engage in sustained cross- and extra-disciplinary dialogue with colleagues, artists, and practitioners. The symposium is built around an alternative scholarly/creative format. There are no membership fees, and participants at the first meeting have been invited to attend.
The organizers of the symposium are Christa Albrecht Crane (Assistant Professor at Utah Valley State College) and David Rieder (Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University, Raleigh). Sarah Arroyo (Assistant Professor at California State University, Long Beach) was also instrumental in the earlier stages of the process. They hope that this venue will foster new directions for scholarship and collaborations in the field of Rhetoric and Composition.
The first meeting will take place in November 2004 with a total of nineteen participants. The symposium will feature "single sessions," in which presenters present and discuss longer projects, and "poly-sessions," comprised of a panel of presenters who discuss shorter projects. All sessions will be highly interactive and engaging.
